Meet The SAB | Dr. Juan Tricarico
Three questions with Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Juan Tricarico
Meet Dr. Juan Tricarico
Dr. Tricarico is a Senior Vice President for Environmental Research and Distinguished Scientist at Dairy Management, Inc.
What do you wish more people knew about dairy sustainability?
I wish more people knew that the dairy sector made huge strides toward sustainability. All the changes that took place, because the sector is always looking to use natural resources more efficiently, have improved sustainability significantly over the last 60 years. The sector is now building improvements for the future on a strong legacy of sustainability and stewardship, and I am very confident we will continue making progress.
What obstacles do you foresee for the future of sustainability in the livestock industry and how will those be overcome?
Technical mitigation options can be created through research – science shows this again and again. However, those technical options need to be accompanied by socioeconomic innovation to effectively address implementation barriers. The creation of technical options alone is not enough. Environmental outcomes cannot be treated as externalities and instead need to be fully incorporated into new socioeconomic and business models for implementation to occur.
What do you wish others knew about carbon marketplaces?
I wish people knew that carbon marketplaces are new socioeconomic models to address environmental impact. They are in the early stages of development, which means different models need to be created and tried. It is so critical that the sector has an opportunity to use trial and error, to be creative and a little bit audacious, in testing these marketplace models to see which ones succeed and which ones fail. And, finally, that those failures are framed as successes in learning, because valuable lessons will be learned in every instance that can become useful to develop better models.
