Three questions with SAB member Dr. Ermias Kebreab
Meet Dr. Ermias Kebreab
Dr. Kebreab is Associate Dean for Global Engagement in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and the Director of the World Food Center at University of California - Davis
How do you define sustainability?
Sustainability is about having a system where you have minimized all the environmental impacts you can while producing safe and affordable food and making sure the animals are also properly cared for.
Why is being part of the Athian Scientific Advisory Board important to you?
Athian is playing a crucial role in making sure that the reduction accounting is done in an appropriate, science-based way, so people who are reducing emissions [on the farm] get credit and those reductions are credible and permanent reductions. This helps people who are buying the credits know that they have been scientifically vetted and the reductions are real.
What are you most excited about in the sustainability space?
The positive changes that are happening. I think most people are on board that this is something we need to continuously improve and I’m excited to see that there is now a way in which we can accelerate changes into a more sustainable way of doing things.
